Review : Dust by Joan Frances Turner
Blurb
Nine years ago, Jessie had a family. Now, she has a gang.
Nine years ago, Jessie was a vegetarian. Now, she eats very fresh meat.
Nine years ago, Jessie was in a car crash and died. Nine years ago, Jessie was human.
Now, she’s not.
After she was buried, Jessie awoke and tore through the earth to arise, reborn, as a zombie. Jessie’s gang is the Fly-by-Nights. She loves the ancient, skeletal Florian and his memories of time gone by. She’s in love with Joe, a maggot-infested corpse. They fight, hunt, dance together as one—something humans can never understand. There are dark places humans have learned to avoid, lest they run into the zombie gangs.
But now, Jessie and the Fly-by-Nights have seen new creatures in the woods—things not human and not zombie. A strange new illness has flamed up out of nowhere, causing the undeads to become more alive and the living to exist on the brink of death. As bits and pieces of the truth fall around Jessie, like the flesh off her bones, she’ll have to choose between looking away or staring down the madness—and hanging onto everything she has come to know as life…
Bloggers, :)
I apologize greatly for the delay in this review. But here it is, finally. :)
Dust by Joan Frances Turner is in my opinion a beautifully written novel. It is compelling, lovable and all in all an amazing page-turner.
Dust follows the story of Jessie, who is a zombie, (but don’t be turned off readers, it’s not your average ‘zombie-eating-people’ novel) Jessie is part of the ‘Fly-by-Nights’ gang, inhabiting and controlling woods in Indiana, trying to keep there turf from a rival gang, ‘The Rat Pack.’
Jessie loves being in her gang, and everyone in it; Florian a dust withered corpse. She is also in love with Joe, who is being eaten away by magots.
Jessie loves the life she lives now. Loves the stories her fellow gang members tell her, like of Florian’s beach, the shores of Lake Michigan.
When weird things, with no reasons begin to happen, like Teresa (gang leader) leaving for days and coming back with no explanation. And especially the local hoos (humans) come staggering through the woods, smelling the same, Jessie is both appalled and curious.
That, is up until Jessie comes across her brother Jim, the world as she knows it spirals rapidly down hill. Will she survive the deadly disease going around?
I found myself thinking of whether zombies really do exist, when reading this novel. Sure call me a freak but how many so-called ‘deaths’ have really been zombie related?
The writing techniques used by the author is one that should be awarded. She made the characters both adaptable and realistic. The descriptive language she wrote with, really brought you into the story, it was like you were there with the characters.
My favourite part of this novel has to be when Jessie encounters death, who takes the form of a different person she has lost, from Joe to Jim to Florian. Death tries to play Jessie, but her mind is pre-occupied with the thoughts of Florian’s beach, and she does not fall into Death’s trap.
The novel itself is powerful, clever, funny and plain and simply brilliant. It is a novel i would highly recommend to teens and up. It opens up your eyes to a whole different side of the whole zombie world.
So here’s my rating;
5/5 :)
The next novel I hope to review is Lauren Kate’s Torment the sequel to the stunning Fallen.

Review : Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl
Blurb
Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she's struggling to conceal her power, and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.

Bloggers,
Good afternoon, yep, I am finally getting back in the reviewing chair. Well here's the review of Beautiful Creatures, (Thank you to Jess for letting me borrow it)
This book is set in a typical old school town known as Gatlin. Gatlin is a place were everyone knows everyone and there is no way a secret can be kept. We are told this story from the point of view of Ethan Wate, a boy of 16, who has lived in Gatlin his whole life, he knows what everyone does and what they are going to do, just like everyone else in the town.
This harmonious way of living is suddenly disrupted when new girl Lena Duchannes arrives, the niece of Gatlin's own 'haunted old man' living in his 'haunted mansion' on the top of a hill. It's sounds a bit clichè but it fits the story perfectly.
This story evolves into a story of passion, fear, confusion and much more. As Ethan and Lena grow closer there are two groups if people hating their love for each other, the high society of Gatlin, (the snoby mothers of the cheerleaders and jocks) and a world that has been inhabiting Gatlin and the mortals never even knew existed this world being the world of Casters and more importantly the Dark Casters.
We as the reader witness what could be called and in the eyes of Ethan is called a Witch Hunt. Lena is a talented Caster, one who can't yet control what she has the ability to do, and because of this Gatlin's DAR ( the high society of women I mentioned above) want to rid their beloved Gatlin of Lena Duchannes.
Like that wasn't enough, coinciding with this modern day witch hunt, Lena and Ethan also meet problems from Lena's world, like her Claiming (a coming of age kind of thing.) It feels to them like it's coming at them from all angles and there doesn't seem to be an explaination or a way out.
Beatiful Creatures is book that will have the reader confused at one point but suddenly it all makes sense, its an interesting aspect to have in a book, but in this specific type of novel it works. The time plan can sometimes be a little unrealistic and in some cases you could be completely lost, especially at the start. But with the little reminders that the authors give to lena to give to us, steers us back in the way of looking at it.
I especially like the way that this book is, in a way a countdown, bloggers don't be turned off by this, when i say a coutndown, it is all building up to this one massive event. The one thing I did dislike about this book is the ending, it doesn't give a long enough cooling down period, but i suppose it does leave an open gap for the sequel to slide in nicely.
One thing about this novel that really stood out to me, in a good way, were the flashbacks that Lena and Ethan witness, to the time when the soldiers burned most of Gatlin to the ground, sure at the start your wondering if it even has a connection to the story line, but of course it has a very clever connection.
This novel has joined my list of favourite books, it's not at the top but near enough to it. :) I would highly recommend it, keep in mind it does need a bit of thought so i would not advise a person that wants an easy and quick read to read this.
So quickly on to my rating. . . ;
4 1/2 / 5 (losing the half mark becase of the ending)
Well bloggers i hope I have just encouraged you to go out and read it and i hopefully will go buy it for myself :) Sadly I don't have a book to read at the moment, but whenever i get money i will be out my door like a bullet and up to the book store. I hope to Incarecon by Catherine Fisher next. So long peeps, review soon :)
